Sound Doctrine
At the end of Paul's life, knows that he will soon die. What of all the work that he has done? What will become of the churches he has established -- the people he has converted.
1 Timothy -
1 Tim. 1:3 - left in Ephesus -- teach no OTHER doctrine --
a. Eph. Elders -- Acts 20:, the warning -
b. Problem as seen here -
1. the SOURCE of our teaching -- fables / genealogies
2. The RESULT of our teaching - minister questions vs. producing love, good conscience, and unfeigned faith.
1 Tim. 4:1-6 - warning against false doctrines
a. Demons vs. GOOD doctrine -
b. Again - concentrates on the SOURCE --
1. demons (also vs. 7 - old wives' fables) vs.
2. inspiration - vs.
c. ALSO - RESULT -
1. 'religion' - binding rules that don't make any difference to God -
2. godliness -
1 Tim. 4:13 - GIVE attention to … doctrine …
1 Tim. 4:16 - Take HEED unto …
1 Tim. 5:17 - elders that 'labor in doctrine' --
1 Tim. 6:1 - teach people to live in harmony with the teaching the doctrine be not evil spoken of.
1 Tim. 6:3 - some not CONSENT to WHOLESOME words -- which is according to godliness.
Titus
1:9 -- HOLD FAST -- exhort & confute the gainsayer --
1:13 -- rebuke -- may be SOUND
2:1 - Preacher to preach that which is SOUND --
2:7-8 - uncorrupt in doctrine -- SOUND SPEECH --
2 Tim.
1:13 - Paul knowing his time was at hand -- HOLD FAST -- sound words -- learned of PAUL
2:14-18 -
a. word of truth -- truth --
b. RESULT --
1. not profit - subverting -- foolishness - overthrow faith
4:2-3 - preach THE WORD - reprove, rebuke, exhort -- doctrine!
a. time comes that some NOT ENDURE such -
b. turn to fables - follow lusts
